More than 40 Parker School students have recently earned over 50 awards in three art competitions. The kindergarten through 12th grade students are being recognized for original artwork submitted to Youth Art Month, Young at Art and The Waimea Arts Council’s Na Opio Student Art Show at the Fireside Gallery.
More than 40 Parker School students have recently earned over 50 awards in three art competitions. The kindergarten through 12th grade students are being recognized for original artwork submitted to Youth Art Month, Young at Art and The Waimea Arts Council’s Na Opio Student Art Show at the Fireside Gallery.
Youth Art Month is a statewide competition administered by The Council for Art Education emphasizing the value of art education. Eighteen Parker students in grades one through 12 submitted 19 pieces, all of which have been chosen as statewide winners from more than 780 submissions. Their art is on display through Sunday in the State Capitol Building on Oahu.
Two students earned top honors in the competitive statewide exhibition: Ava Harris (grade 2) won best in her age group for her oil pastel and glue self portrait titled “Picasso and I” and Rusty Leialoha-Cabral (grade 7) won best in his age group for his digital photo collage titled “Waves of Creativity.”
The second art competition lower and middle school students participated in is Young at Art, an exhibit for public, private, charter and home school children on Hawaii Island by the East Hawaii Cultural Center &Hawaii Museum of Contemporary Art in Hilo. Eighth-grade student Reece Herendeen earned top honors as Judges Choice, one of just 10 pieces chosen from more than 300 submissions, with his acrylic painting titled “Pop Art Dog Affect.” In all, the artwork of 21 Parker students in kindergarten through grade eight earned recognition as islandwide winners. Student artwork is on display through Saturday at the EHCC/HMCA at 141 Kalakaua St. in Hilo as part of the Young at Art exhibit.
Twelve upper and middle school students earned awards in The Waimea Arts Council’s Na Opio Student Art Show. This contest exhibits winning artwork by students in grades six through 12 from the North Kohala, South Kohala and Hamakua districts now through Sunday at the Firehouse Gallery in Waimea. Parker students earned five first place awards, three second place and four third place awards for a total of 12 of the possible 21 Na Opio awards. Artwork by an additional sixteen students was also selected to be featured in the exhibition.
